The second oldest operating cemetery in the city, Fairmount opened in 1890 and was designed by German landscape architect Reinhard Schuetze. At 280 acres, it was the largest developed landscape west of the Mississippi River.
Its grounds, monuments and community spaces were conceived on a grand scale and to honor the lives of countless Denver citizens. A tour of the cemetery is a fascinating experience, with tombstones, crypts, chapels and sculptures providing an intriguing glimpse into Colorado’s history.
Founded in 1890, Fairmount is home to several historic Denver landmarks, the state’s most extensive arboretum filled with numerous Champion Trees and one of the largest collections of Heritage Roses in North America. Its two original buildings, the Little Ivy Chapel and the 1890 Gate Lodge, are designated historic Denver landmarks.
Situated atop the grounds of Fairmount, the Mausoleum is one of Denver’s most impressive structures, and it’s known for its beautiful stained glass collection. The building’s design reflects English Gothic revival architecture, with spacious windows that filter and amplify the natural Colorado sunshine.
The Fairmount Mausoleum is a place where generations of families have turned for rest, recreation and remembrance. It is a place that has served the communities of Aurora, Denver, Centennial, Greenwood Village, Littleton, Broomfield, Arvada, Highlands Ranch, Thornton and Westminster for over 128 years.
In addition to its own historic grounds, Fairmount is home to one of the world’s most extensive collections of stained glass and is a state-designated wildlife viewing area. You’ll see a variety of birds and other wildlife throughout the cemetery, including hawks, vultures, rabbits and squirrels.
You can visit the cemetery on any day of the year, and tours are available upon request. During your visit, you can take a guided tour of the grounds and learn about the many famous Denver residents buried here, such as 19 governors, 11 U.S. senators, notable war heroes, educational pioneer Emily Griffith, philanthropist Helen Bonfils and so many more.
